Happy Halloween!

This coming weekend we celebrate another turn of the Wheel of Life on October 31 - whatever it's called - Samhain, All Hallow's Eve or Halloween

188 Galerie window display for Halloween 2015

Whether celebrated traditionally or commercially, pagan or Christian, old or new world - the occasion marks the end of harvest season and is the harbinger of winter coming.

So let us make hay and be jolly! Let's celebrate a fruitful bounty!

Fall in the Appalachians

Samhain is the time when cattle were brought back down from the summer pastures and when livestock were slaughtered for the winter. As at Beltane, special bonfires are lit - deemed to have protective and cleansing powers with attendant rituals to invoke them. The traditions and importance of Halloween vary greatly wherever it is observed.

Typical festive Halloween activities include trick-or-treating and the related "guising", attending costume parties, decorating, carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, playing pranks, divination games, haunted attractions, telling scary stories, watching horror films, lighting candles and visiting the dead.
